One nice thing about being in the business of writing about old cars is that you get the opportunity to meet some of the most knowledgable parts vendors and automotive technicians around. So when you have problems with your car that you can’t solve yourself, you know just who to call. For the last week or so I have been struggling with my MG TF roadster. The little “bugger” was always a fine-running car. Although it’s not a shiny, restored TF, it always ran as good or better than the fancy ones. But now it is starting hard and doesbn’t run well at all. Like many sports car owners, I blamed the carburetors and went through the carb-balancing-and-tuning procedures severalk times. I’m no expert at this stuff, but I can’t believe I’m that far off. I used the Gunnison Color Tune and Carbalancer tools and I should be a lot closer to a good-running MG than I seem to be. So now I’m talking to Jim Wagner, the ace mechanic at Zero to 60 Garage in Sherwood, Wis. Jim is primarily a Mustang man, but he happens to own a TF roadster that’s getting a full restoration. So after a few phone calls, or maybe a visit to the shop, I’m sure we’ll get the problem licked. I’ll let you know what happens.
