Michigan Introduces Bill to Expand Use of Historic Vehicles

Michigan, the birthplace to many of the collector cars we cherish, has introduced legislation (S.B. 1146) that would amend the state’s current law governing historic motor vehicles to permit their unlimited use as “exhibition” vehicles the entire month of August each year was introduced in Michigan by Senator Mike Kowall.  Under current Michigan law, use of historic vehicles is limited to participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, including mechanical testing, but not for general transportation.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Senate Committee on Transportation (List Below) in Support of S.B. 1146

·          S.B. 1146 will provide Michigan historic vehicle owners the opportunity to enjoy recreational driving in the month of August in addition to the other sanctioned uses.

·          S.B. 1146 provides added incentive to owners of qualifying historic vehicles (more than 25-years old) to register as “historic.”

Please contact members of the Michigan Senate Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support of S.B. 1146.   Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org.  Thank you for your assistance.

One Response to Michigan Introduces Bill to Expand Use of Historic Vehicles

  1. John Russell says:

I am the past president of the Twin Bay British Car Club (2X) and have owned and operated historic vehicles for 50 years.
I read with great interest the bill submitted by Senator MIke Kowall, removing restrictions on historic vehicles for personal use for the month of August.
I am working to begin the process of removing restrictions for the entire year.
I have found no reason in having restrictions, and am gaining support for their removal from the insurance industry, clubs around Michigan, and individuals.
We have a short season of enjoying our historic vehicles, and the ability to operate them as we wish is important to all collectors.
I welcome comments, and will be in touch with more information and facts to support removal of the restrictions.
