Auction companies bring out top-shelf iron (and aluminum) for their respective sales in the Monterey, Calif., area each August. In fact, the auction companies must uncover the hobby’s halo automobiles to compete for attention with nearby concours events, including the long-running Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Since RM Auctions already has to regularly fortify its top shelf from the heavy hitters it consigns throughout the year, hobbyists expect its Monterey lineup to break the shelf. This year, that shelf may simply crumble.
For 2012, RM Auctions has already consigned three stellar vehicles to its Aug. 17-18 Monterey sale at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center: a 1938 Talbot-Lago T23 teardrop coupe, a 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi sport cabriolet and a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta.
The Ferrari 410 S, chassis 0594 CM, is the only example built with a closed body, while the stunning Talbot-Lago, chassis 93064, is the sole Jeancart-style teardrop originally built upon a four-liter T23 chassis. These multi-million-dollar cars join the previous Pebble Beach “Best of Show”-winning 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi sport cabriolet on the auction block.
“Our Monterey sale has established a reputation over the years for offering automobiles of exceptional quality and provenance. This year’s sale will again provide a wonderful celebration of automotive styling, honoring the world’s top coachbuilders,” said Rob Myers, chairman and founder, RM Auctions. “We are thrilled to be bringing the Ferrari 410 S Berlinetta and the Talbot-Lago T23 teardrop coupe to our Monterey auction stage. They are the epitome of great automotive design and, as such, a natural fit with the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend.”
