GREENSBORO, N.C. – The big news of this year’s March sale was the no reserve bevy of collector cars from the Yow Collection, Knoxville, Tenn.
Despite an overnight ice storm, the bidders showed up at the GAA Classic Cars Auction in droves. A total of 69 cars had found new homes by 3 p.m. Saturday, March 8, and Mr. Yow while admitting he could never recoup his investment. At 78 years of age, he felt the time was nigh to part with the lion’s share of his collection.
Some interesting examples were, a 1956 Studebaker Hawk with a Packard V8 hammered for $17,500, a 1955 Cadillac Deville 4dr HT went for $11,900, 1942 Lincoln Zephyr was bid to and sold at $20,000, and a venerable Model A Roadster gaveled at $13,200. Note these prices do not include the buyer’s commission and most were a condition 3.
The six-figure sale was a pretty 1957 fuelie Corvette that sold for $108,000. A 1958 Impala in condition 1 was bid to 107,000 to no effect.
A 1958 Pontiac Bonneville 2dr HT was expected to join the above group, but the owner let it go for $56,000.
Final details on these cars and more will appear in an upcoming edition of OCW.
