Smith’s Auction Co. is preparing for its Summer Classic Car Auction from July 13-14 at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Organizers say it will feature some very nice and rare cars — including the Skylark and Woodie pictured. The auction starts at 1 p.m. Friday with a large collection of memorabilia.
Smith’s Auction Company, based in Dexter, Mo., and owned by Sherm Smith and his sons, did their first auction in the summer of 1994. This event was held at Sherm’s Classic Car lot in Dexter under a big tent. There were about 140 cars offered at the inaugural event and about half of them sold. A local auctioneer did the calling and Sherm and some friends did the floor work.
After the auction was over, Sherm knew he had to improve and expand the event to a larger city and facility if he was to grow and compete. He made his first move to Cape Girardeau, a city 50 miles north of his home base. The facility he chose was the Show Me Center. The first year in this new facility, hHe had over 200 cars for the Saturday event, and more than 65 percent of the cars sold.
In 1996, the company, pleased with the results in the Show Me Center, expanded the sale to a Friday-Saturday event.
Smith does a spring auction in March and a summer auction in July. Smith’s Auction team comes from all over the country and is the best in the business, according to Smith. Smith Auction Company also does an annual sale in Paducah, Ky., in the fall and is planning on expanding to another site in Missouri soon.
