Back to the ’50s heads back to St. Paul

admin |

Ahhhh, the 1950s: the U.S. economy was on the uptick and the wheels of Detroit were humming. Some of the most popular cars ever manufactured were rolling off the assembly line as if to keep in step with the gyrations of Elvis Presley and the swagger of James Dean.

In hindsight, the ’50s are often called the golden era, and that happy slice of American life — real or imagined — comes back for a visit every year at the Minnesota Street Rod Association’s Back to the 50’s Weekend in St. Paul, Minn.

Approximately 12,000 street rods, customs, Classics and restored vehicles dating from 1964 and earlier are set to invade the Minnesota Fairgrounds June 18-20. It’s the 37th annual year for the popular event, which includes more than 350 vendors and automotive exhibits, the 11th Annual Dana Mecum Hot Rod Auction and a giant swap meet, along with outdoor concerts, a craft fair, Ladies Showcase Expo and Kid’s World.

Hours for the event are Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
