CAMARO — (SIX/V-8) — SERIES Q — The Camaro, for 1972, had a slightly different grille mesh and new high-back bucket seats. The fate of the car was said to be in danger, since a strike at the Camaro assembly plant (Lordstown, Ohio) turned into a disaster. The walkout stranded thousands of bodies on the assembly line and, by the time it was over, these cars were unfit for sale under new federal safety standards. General Motors was forced to scrap the bodies and almost decided to do the same with the Camaro/Firebird program. Chevrolet engineer Alex Mair fought successfully for survival of the Camaro, which went on to higher sales. Camaros wore E78-14 tires in standard trim and base engine selections were the same as in Chevelles, with different V-8s used for federal and California cars.
