How To Keep Your Keys Safe and on Hand
Losing the keys to your home sucks. You might have to get new locks, and that’s annoying and expensive. Losing the keys to your car is even worse because your car might be gone by the time you realize that the keys are missing. The only thing you can do to prevent that fate is to learn to keep your keys safe and close by. Putting even a little effort into this will come in handy in the future and might save your car from getting stolen multiple times. Here’s what you need to know.
Where to Not Leave Your Keys
The first step in keeping your keys safe is to avoid putting them in the following areas.
Near a window
Leaving your car keys near a window is just inviting trouble. Let’s assume they catch the eye of a malicious person. If the window is open, they’ll try to snatch the keys with wires or hangers and it might not be that difficult for someone experienced in theft. If the window is closed, they’ll most likely wait for nighttime or for you to get busy. Once they see the opportunity, they’ll break your window and the keys will be gone by the time you get there.
- Moveable storage
This is less of a theft issue and more of just losing the keys completely. Do not put them in a small, moveable container or even a large moveable container, for that matter. You might forget, or someone else around you might move the container somewhere else, and you’ll be left looking for the keys.
- In your bag
This might sound counterintuitive, but don’t keep the keys in your bag if you don’t keep the bag with you at all times. Don’t put the keys in a bag if the said bag is not zipped properly after every use. Both of these scenarios can lead to key theft as someone is looting your bag.
- Open space
Do not leave them just hanging on a hook out in the open where everyone can see them. Sure, they’re in your home, but you might not realize it when an expert thief comes in to claim them and then disappears without a trace.
Where To Keep Your Keys
Now that you know where not to leave your keys, it’s time to go on the offensive and talk about places where the keys should be.
Inside a holder
Purchase a small key holder or key fob case and put it around your keys. This will increase the size and bulkiness of the keys, but they’ll also be a lot more noticeable in your pocket or bag. These cases often have strong keychain links as well, so no one can try to pull a sleight of hand on you either.
Where you spend most time
It might sound obvious, but keep the keys where you spend the most time, given that that place is not open to outsiders. So, your office or bedroom is a better spot than the doorway.
In your pockets
This echoes the previous point as well since your pockets are always with you. Try to keep them in the front pocket since it’s harder to steal from there without you noticing.
