When I went to Bonneville last fall with the Fox Valley Technical College racing team, we were the only out-of-state college there. Three other college teams from Brigham Young University, Utah State and Utah Valley University also competed.
During the weekend, we saw the teams from the other colleges setting up tents and tables for some kind of event. Then we saw dozens of school buses drive onto the salt and unload students at these tents. They appeared to be both grammar school and high school students and they were brought there to experience the allure of the Bonneville Salt Flats and the thrill of racing there.
I was thinking about this the other day and I began to wonder why old car clubs and car show promoters don’t do the same thing to introduce young men and women to our great hobby. Why not bring busloads of kids to Hershey, Carlisle, Iola, Back to the ’50s, Woodward Ave., The Masterpiece and other events?
What a great way to get kids involved in our hobby!
