Old Cars Reader Wheels: 1937 Packard
Old Cars spotlights a reader’s 1937 Packard with sentimental ties.
Charles McDonald is the proud owner of this gorgeous Packard. Not only is the car stunning, it has sentimental value as well. This is what Charles had to say about his wonderful Packard…
"My 1937 Packard 120C Touring Sedan had a body off frame restoration way back in 1996. My Friend Bill Herndon purchased the car from the restoration shop and took exceptional care of the car. Bill attended local car shows and touring events over his years of ownership. Around 2012 I made Bill a serious offer to buy the car and he was not interested at that time, so I then made a standing offer whenever he would be ready. Fast forward to 2018 I receive a phone call from Bill, and he unfortunately suffered a stroke and he just turned 91 at the time, Maryland suspended his drivers license so he understood it was time to sell the car. He asked if I was still interested and of course I was, within three hours I owned the classy old Girl! The next day I picked her up and she was only running on five of the eight cylinders, Bill only added six thousand miles to the car in the 22 years of ownership, but he did change the oil every year and the coolant every three years, but nothing else. What I did was replace all the ignition components like cap, rotor, wires and also replace all the brake components like Master Cylinder, wheel Cylinders and rubber brake lines, I replaced radiator hoses and installed a new thermostat, I just wanted to be sure that the car could be toured and it paid off big time! This car is not a “Garage Queen” during the summer car season I generally put on over 5000 miles while going on AACA and CCCA tours. Last year I had the engine “Freshened Up” new rings and valves and installed a 1949 R11 Borg Warner overdrive and the car now can easily cruise all day long at 65 MPH with turning only 2,300 RPMs. This car is my “Keeper” and is a solid #2 condition and drives like a Packard should, as the old saying goes “Ask The Man Who Owns One” yest these are high quality cars!"
