For 2012, the Iola Old Car Show celebrates its 40th year as a hub for car-crazed men and women to gather for fun, food and four wheels (not necessarily in that order) in early July. The Old Cars Weekly staff dug deep into the archives to honor 40 years of old cars gathering in Iola and found this group of pictures to be the oldest representatives of those early years. More »

The four makes of motor vehicles featured as the theme of the July 12-15, 2012, Iola Old Car Show — Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile — may have expired early in this century (thus the theme “21st Century Orphans”), but each has left a long history of significant products that are being celebrated. They are a 1938 Plymouth pickup truck owned by Vernon Meyer, 1950 Mercury coupe owned by Matt Gilson, 1957 Pontiac Bonneville convertible owned by Chuck Richardson and 1969 Hurst/Oldsmobile hardtop owned by Bob Blattler. Nomads wend their way to convention

Luke and Kathy Miller never have a problem deciding where to go for vacation, or how to get there. They just go wherever the Chevrolet Nomad Association annual convention is held. This year they are heading to Sacramento, Calif., for the week of July 8-13. As far as getting there, the Millers will drive their 1955 Nomad (pictured) from their home in Caledonia, Wis., just like they do every year. More »

Part and Parcel: State of the Swap

Each July the tiny town of Iola, Wis., is invaded by a sea of humanity and old iron. Many in attendance come strictly for the swap meet, which covers about 4,500 spaces.

“Don’t tell me there’s no recovery going on,” said Kurt Kelsey, an Iowa City-based vendor of new-old-stock Pontiac parts. According to Kelsey, his business this year is much better than it has been in a long time. “The phone has been ringing off the hook every day,” he said.
