You know how some funny things just strike you as being funny?
We were at Gunner’s Great Garage today and former Old Cars Weekly ad sales guy Dave Sarna was putting the final touches on an engine install he had done with Heidi Schaefer.
Dropping a 390-cid big-block V-8 into a ’67 Cougar is no easy task, especially when the engine has new Edelbrock cylinder heads, a roller tappet cam and big, fat 429 exhaust manifolds. It’s a shoe horn job for beginners, but we also wanted to keep as much of a stock look as we could under the hood.
Finally the job was done and we put the hood on the white Cougar so Dave could take it for a test drive. To get the Cougar out of a small shop, we temporarily moved another customer’s blue ’74 Triumph Spitfire under the red Triumph TR-250 that was perched on our Backyard Buddy 4-post lift. To make life easy, we slid the Cougar over on our Go-Jacks. Then after the Cougar left the building, we pushed the Spitfire where the Cougar had sat.
When Dave brought the Cougar back, we put it just inside the overhead door, in front of the lift. Then, we thought it would be cool to take some photos. That’s when we realized we had a Red, White & Blue theme going. At first, we thought it was funny to have an American theme going with two British cars, but it didn’t take long to remember that the same color scheme was used on the Union Jack—the Great British flag.
Like we said, it’s funny how some things just strike you as being funny. Or maybe we’ve just been breathing too many exhaust fumes.
