Angry Resident Delivers Damage to Arkansas Post Office

A Jackson County, AR., man remained in jail Monday after he drove two cars, including an antique Mustang, into the post office in Ravenden Springs.

RAVENDEN SPRINGS, Ark —.A Jackson County man remained in jail Monday after he drove two cars into the post office in Ravenden Springs.

Randolph County Sheriff Gary Tribble said Glenn Irvin Sparling, 65, drove his Chevrolet Blazer into the post office on Sunday, and fled the scene. The sheriff told Jonesboro television station KAIT that after repeatedly ramming into the post office, the car stopped running. So Sparling went home and grabbed the keys to his red ‘60s Mustang, and started driving back to the post office.

The sheriff said a deputy spotted Sparling and gave chase. The pursuit ended when Sparling ran the second car into the post office building. Sparling wasn't hurt, the sheriff said. However, the post office didn’t fare as well and now has an 8-foot by 8-foot hole in it.

The sheriff said the red Ford Mustang was roughly halfway through the wall when officers arrived at the scene.

"He was just a local resident who was angry with the government," Tribble told the Jonesboro Sun.

"The damage is extensive. This is a small, modular post office building and it has one wall completely out of it right now," Manager of Post Office Operations Hillrey Adams, said.

Adams said Sparling had damaged a post office previously, and the sheriff said Sparling had a history of damaging postal buildings. No one was in the post office when it was hit.

The facility was moving mail on Monday, but Adams said there was little demand for walk-up services.

"Most people just pull up and see the damage and go on down the road," Adams said.

Tribble said Sparling, who is being held in the Randolph County Jail, was cited for two counts of felony criminal mischief, one count of vehicular fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated, two counts of not having liability insurance, two counts of driving with expired tags, running a stop sign, driving left of center and two counts of driving without a seat belt.

The sheriff contacted U.S. Postal Service inspectors about possibly seeking federal charges against Sparling.

Ravenden Springs has about 130 residents.
