Branson Auction is a buyer’s market

Jim Cox and his wife, Kathy, hosted another enjoyable fall edition of the 35th annual Branson auction over the weekend of Oct. 18-19. The top sale of the weekend almost didn’t happen. See what happened with the 1936 Auburn 852 convertible sedan.

The top-selling car at the fall Branson Auction was this 1936 Auburn 852 Phaeton Sedan, called sold at $97,000.

Jim Cox and his wife, Kathy, hosted another enjoyable fall edition of the 35th annual Branson auction over the weekend of Oct. 18-19. Conducted again within the Branson Convention Center, the event provided a pleasant weekend for most attending with a very eclectic offering of cars.

One group not necessarily doing the best was the consignors. Although bidding was generally strong on higher-quality cars, it wasn’t strong enough for most who brought cars to sell. Concurrently, weaker cars were generally bid to sub-market values, reinforcing what we’ve seen overall in that end of the marketplace this year.

The top sale of the weekend almost didn’t happen. The 1936 Auburn 852 convertible sedan rolled off the podium as a $75,000 no sale, but within two lots, it was declared on the block as a post-block sale at $97,000. It proved to be the only featured car to sell. Other notable sales were a 1967 Chevy Camaro Z/28 for $75,000 (not including buyer premium), 1947 Mercury Eight convertible for $65,000 and a 1962 Dodge Polara convertible for $50,000. In all, 118 of the 271 vehicles offered were declared sold for a 43.5 percent sales rate.

Our “pick of the sale” was a 1974 Plymouth Duster two-door coupe. Billed as having a 225-cid slant six, it really retained its original 195-cid version instead. For $2,500, you’ll have a solid original example of a car that seemed to be everywhere back in the 1970s but is now all but gone.

The next Branson auction will be held April 11-12.
