Duesenbergs to square off in vintage drags
Born out of the crucible of racing, Duesenbergs were built for speed, and many survivors will speed again this year at the Duesenberg Thunder Run and Vintage Fly-in.
Born out of the crucible of racing, Duesenbergs were built for speed, and many survivors will speed again this year at the Duesenberg Thunder Run and Vintage Fly-in at the Goshen Air Center in Goshen, Ind. The new event will be held Sept. 6 as part of the annual Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club Reunion and the ACD Festival, both in Auburn, Ind., during Labor Day Weekend.
Racing Duesenbergs is not a first for the ACD Club. Five years ago, in 2010, the club held the Ab Jenkins Duesenberg Exhibition of Speed, and an astounding 75 Duesenbergs were reportedly at the event — dozens more than had appeared at club reunions immediately preceding the 2010 event. Of those 75 gleaming Duesenbergs at the 2010 Exhibition of Speed, 40 sped down the runway sidemount-to-sidemount at the airport in Kendallville, Ind.
This year, organizers are welcoming vintage aircraft as well, with a B-17 bomber and Ford Tri-Motor already committed to the event. A 350-mph Jet Truck will also participate.
The ACD Club Reunion is a nearly week-long affair. The Hoosier Tour travels throughout Indiana from Sept. 1-3, ending at the ACD Automobile Museum in Auburn, Ind., at noon on Sept. 3. Other club events are focused around the museum with club judging, tech talks and a Sept. 4 swap meet for club members. On Sept. 5, cars leave Eckhart Park to form the ACD Festival Parade of Classics, ending in the Auburn town square for a car show.
The Sept. 6 Thunder Run wraps up the weekend of Classics. Learn more at www.2015thunderrun.com.
