While everyone else is sleeping off a heavy serving of Thanksgiving turkey, smart car enthusiasts will be driving their vehicles to the Daytona International Speedway for the 34th annual Daytona Turkey Run Nov. 22-25.
The event is said to be the largest combined car show and swap meet, and with an expected 5,000 vehicles, nearly as many swap meet spaces and one mile of cars for sale, it very well might be. And this year, the show may even attract more than 5,000 cars!
Until this year, the event had a 5,000-vehicle cutoff, which has been lifted for 2007. A grass area along the speedway's back section has become available for pre-1980 show cars. The show also welcomes some 1980-and-later vehicles on a pre-registered basis Nov. 22-24, but all collectible cars are welcome Nov. 25, the event's final day.
The well-rounded Daytona Turkey Run features a full complement of cars: spectators will see restored cars, street rods and hot rods, customs, sports cars, race cars and trucks not just in the show area, but also in the 1,500-car car corral.
Also included in the activities is a raffle in which a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be awarded in the event's annual giveaway. The bright red Camaro has been mildly customized with mag wheels and performance upgrades to its small-block engine.
Instead of sitting in front of the television after you're filled up with turkey, make a run for the Daytona Turkey Run.
