Nomads Will Wander to West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The city of Charleston, W.Va., is going all-out to welcome the Chevrolet Nomad Association to the city for the club’s 20th annual convention, to be held July 20-24.

Mayor Danny Jones has issued the “Charleston Challenge,” to have 100 of the 1955- ’56 and ’57 Chevy sport station wagons lined up on Kanawha Boulevard for CNA members to judge and the public to enjoy.

Jones has a special stake in the event. He is a CNA member and the owner of a beautiful, restored 1956 Nomad.

The week-long convention will be headquartered at the Charleston House Holiday Inn. Jones has ordered that Kanawha Boulevard, which runs between the hotel and the Kanawha River, be blocked off for Nomad parking and renamed Nomad Blvd. for the week.

The CNA, with 1,300 members, usually attracts 80-100 Nomads to its meets, which are held in a different region of the country each year.

“Some of our members have been spending their vacations together for 20 years,” said CNA President Skeeter Maxwell of Queen Creek, Ariz.

“We choose locations where they can visit different attractions and local sights.”

Tuesday, July 22, is designated as Show-n-Shine day, when members will judge the Nomads in several restored and modified classes. The best time for public viewing is Tuesday evening, when local car clubs are invited to join the Nomads for a cruise night.

Tours to area attractions are planned on Wednesday. The convention winds up with an awards banquet Thursday evening.
