Superstorm Sandy: A Hurricane & the Hobby

Although the Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey still stands, the inside is devastated from mud and salt water damage following Hurricane Sandy. The building will have to be gutted and restored and the cars rebuilt or scrapped.

After 12 long years, the Vintage Car Club of Ocean County finally fulfilled its dream of opening a car museum in Point Pleasant, N.J., on Sept. 15. Less than three weeks later, that dream washed out to sea, almost literally, when Hurricane Sandy came crashing into the United States’ East Coast on Oct. 29. 1,100 people, 901 Ponchos at 40th POCI show

Jack Buck of Greenville, Pa., brought his custom-built “El Poncho,” a 1960 Pontiac converted into an El Camino-style pickup.

Activity in the Pontiac Oakland Club International has been up and down over the past 40 years, but the end of the club’s fourth decade brought back a pattern of growth following the demise of the Pontiac brand. That was quite evident at the recent POCI meet. Check out the highlights. More »

Twin Cities turns back the clock for another great Back to the 50’s

This Model A Ford truck is more typical of what lines the tree-shaded roads around Back to the 50’s in June. This red hauler is particularly sharp.

Despite its name, the Minnesota Street Rod Association’s annual Back to the 50’s event isn’t directly about the 1950s as it is about the 1973 cult classic “American Graffiti,” which takes place in 1962. That film reminded Minnesota gear heads about their own automotive heritage of cruising the loop around St. Paul in cool cars, so the MSRA started Back to the 50’s 39 years ago to bring the 1950s from the screen to the street. Nomads wend their way to convention

Luke and Kathy Miller never have a problem deciding where to go for vacation, or how to get there. They just go wherever the Chevrolet Nomad Association annual convention is held. This year they are heading to Sacramento, Calif., for the week of July 8-13. Joe Bortz to display 4 historic concept cars at POCI Convention

The 1954 Bonneville Special was one of the two Pontiacs shown at the 1954 Motorama. It is in completely original condition and has about 400 miles on the odometer.

Four Pontiac concept cars from the legendary Bortz Dream Car Collection will be featured in a special display at the 2012 Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI) Convention, which will be held in St. Charles, Ill., from July 17-21. “No matter where these cars are displayed, they always set attendance records,” said Joe Bortz. “The public’s interest in them hasn’t waned over the years, it has actually intensified.” More »
