2010 Golden Quill Award winners

Club pubs, stand up and take a bow

Out of hundreds of car club and hobby-related publications that were submitted for 2010 award consideration, 176 have achieved the Golden Quill Award from Old Cars Weekly. This represents seven categories ranging from large national publications to subcompact-size regional newsletters.

“The annual challenge continues to grow fierce among car club publications,” says Gerald Perschbacher, chief judge of the competition. “Some have grown from commendable to highly outstanding. Overall, the publication side of the car hobby is doing well. On the down side, I can see some clubs struggling to meet the cost of a printed publication. In select cases, they have migrated their newsletter to an online version. In a few cases, publications that had been popular several years ago have dwindled in size and content or have disappeared.”

Perschbacher is quick to add that this doesn’t mean clubs are weakening. “The changes are simply a reflection of our times. The dollar is tight, and with the price of club operations on the rise, clubs are facing a reality check in expenditures.”

Some publications have a commendable string of consecutive honors as Golden Quill Award winners. Others are on the list for the first time.

“We have an Honorable Mention category, too,” says Angelo Van Bogart, OCW editor. “This encourages good publications to improve so that they can ease into an award category. It also allows some past award-winning publications that may have had a lean year to receive recognition as they, hopefully, will reposition as a future winner.”

Perschbacher, in consultation with OCW’s editorial staff, considered the publications sent throughout 2010. Then the final picks were made. “It’s a long process of reviewing, sorting, grouping and comparing,” Perschbacher says. “Fairness and consistency are important in the selection.” The editorial staff makes the final decisions.

Van Bogart adds, “Congratulations to all the winners and honorees on the list. As for publications not shown in this issue, there’s always a chance to win for 2011.”

To be considered for the Golden Quill Award, clubs send copies of each issue to two locations: Editor, Old Cars Weekly, 700 East State St., Iola, WI 54990 and to Gerald Perschbacher, Chief Judge, 8868 Rock Forest Dr., St. Louis, MO 63123-1116. All clubs are encouraged to participate.

In the case of club publications that are offered only online, copies should be printed out and submitted to make judging fair and consistent.
