HERSHEY, Pa. - Drive-in movies were first introduced in New Jersey in the 1930s as a way to make the movie going experience more comfortable for guests by allowing visitors to watch movies from the comfort of their own car. Drive-ins reached the peak of their popularity in the 1950s and '60s. At that time there were over 4,000 drive-ins in the United States. The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum will be hosting a drive-in movie weekend on July 15-17, allowing guests to experience the nostalgia brought on by this iconic characteristic of the time.
Every night will have a double feature with the first movie beginning at approximately 8:45 each evening. Food vendors will be on site with your drive-in favorites.
On Friday, July 15, the museum will be showing Rio and Tucker: The Man and His Dream. Saturday, July 16 will feature Rio and the edited version of Grease (with content that is appropriate for all audiences). Rio and Tucker: The Man and His Dream will again be presented on Sunday night, July 17. The suggested donation is $10 per car. For the comfort and consideration of all visitors, the AACA Museum asks that pets be left at home.
Rio is an animated comedy released in 2011 about a pet macaw named Blu who travels to Brazil where he meets the wild and independent Jewel. Together they have to escape the evil cockatoo Nigel to find their way back to Blu's home. Featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenburg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez and Jemaine Clement this film is sure to entertain the entire family.
Released in 1978, Grease has become one the great musicals of our time. Based in the 1950s when dive-ins were at their peak, Grease is a love story that follows good girl Sandy Olsen and bad boy Danny Zuko as they struggle to come to terms with their love among the social pressures of high school. Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, this musical is a hit for all ages.
Based on a true story, Tucker: The Man and His Dream presents the struggles that Preston Tucker had to face as he tried to make and sell his idea of the perfect automobile, his 1984 Tucker Sedan. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and staring Jeff Bridges, Joan Adams and Martin Landau, this film appeals to all generations.
In addition to the drive-in festivities, the AACA museum will stay open late on Saturday and Sunday with a special admission price of just $5 per person from 5-9 p.m. so that guests can enjoy the exhibits before the start of the movies.
The AACA Museum, a member of the Smithsonian Institute Affiliations Program, displays beautifully restored automobiles, buses and motorcycles in unique life-like scenes representing the 1900s-1970s in a cross-country journey from New York to San Francisco.
