Car run recognizes two who always finish what they start

A reminder that this Saturday, Aug. 13, the New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run will celebrate its Silver Anniversary Tour. The Minnesota event started in 1987 as part of New Brighton’s Centennial Celebration. Annually, 60+ brass era cars gather in New London for the 120-mile trek to New Brighton.

For the 25th Anniversary Run, over 80 cars have registered to take on the challenge of this endurance Run. The field includes two drivers who have participated in each of the previous 24 Runs. The really amazing part is that they have crossed the finish line in every tour as well.

John Elliott of Edina, Minn., and Bob Long of Fargo, N.D., have finished every NLNB tour they have started. That beats the average completion rate of approximately 87 percent.
Both drivers own and drive Maxwells consistently on the tour. Bob has driven two different Maxwells (1908 and 1910) over the years. John has driven a variety of cars, some owned by other people, during his 24-year streak.

The Antique Car Run honored the two “perfect” drivers at a brunch Friday. The drivers will also lead the parade downtown Main Street New London on Friday at 5 p.m.

The Silver Anniversary Tour starts on Saturday, August 13, 7 am from Peace Lutheran Church in New London. The caravan will make stops in Grove City (8:30 am), Litchfield (9:30 am), Kingston (10:30 am), Buffalo (departure after 1:00 pm), and Crystal (2:30 pm), as it heads to the New Brighton finish line, 3:00 – 7:00 pm, at Long Lake Regional Park.
