Ultimate Garage Giveaway winner keeps active in the hobby

Bob Evans stands by his ’72 Challenger – a 340, four-speed. There are only minor rust spots on the rear quarter panels, but he said the big problem is the roof, which he has plans to replace.

When Bob Evans learned he won our 2011 Ultimate Garage Giveaway, it was perfect timing. Having a garage is pretty important when you live in Wisconsin, it’s winter and you are in the midst of two car projects.

“Both of my projects are sitting outside under car covers and that’s a big reason that I was so excited to hear that I had won the garage from 64 Metals, scissor lift from Complete Hydraulic, Millermatic 140 Auto Set welder and other goodies,” the Evansville resident said of our prize package, which included the garage and a dozen other prizes totaling $9,000.

When we caught up with Evans in December, he described his two current projects: “Right now the ’72 Challenger Rallye has the rear up in the air with the rear springs, gas tank and axle housing out of it so that I could finish some work on the inner fender panels. The ’56 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer two door is a basket case” — but as the owner of at least a dozen previous projects, Evans knows what to do with it.

Evans said the first car he ever worked on was his brother’s 1958 Ford Fairlaine 500 convertible. That was in 1965. It wasn’t long before he was engrossed in the hobby, with his first car purchase a 1930 Ford Model A Fordor “that was right outside of my classroom at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs in 1968.”

His favorite cars: “Anything with fins, mid ’60s and earlier with no preference to manufacturer, smoothies, Kustom Kemps and street rods of all kinds.”

Evans started the Early Hemi Association, with permission from Chrysler, and he started a publication called The Hemi-poly News while living in Tucson. Shortly after moving to Wisconsin in 2001, he started going to the annual All MOPAR car show in Belvidere, Ill. It was there he picked up a T/A hood he had purchased on eBay. He and the seller “decided to meet up there and we’ve been friends since then. He was the one that introduced me to Old Cars Weekly by sending me links on the cool stuff, and I ended up subscribing in about 2002.”
