Even an act of childish vandalism failed to dampen the enthusiasm of visitors and participants at this year’s Charlotte AutoFair. Beautiful weather and elbow-to-elbow crowds were reported at the four-day event, held April 8-11 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, N.C., by the Hornets Nest Region AACA.

“Regrettably, some vandalism occurred for the first time ever to show vehicles on display Saturday in several locations around the Speedway facilities,” region executive director Mel Carson said, adding, “The damage involved some type of orange spray media on seats, door panels, steering wheels or dashes. We have been told by owners that much of the damage was easily cleaned before vehicles left the show field, and that the damage did not appear severe.”

Damaged were several cars in the car corral, about eight cars displayed by several car clubs adjacent to the Orange Field, and about 14 cars in the AACA Meet. The organizers expressed regret over the incident and plan to increase security at future events.

The incident was overshadowed by the enthusiasm of more than 150,000 visitors who converged on the grounds. There, they could shop more than 1,600 collector cars for sale, and browse through four flea market fields for vehicle parts and supplies. Lots of filled shopping bags were in evidence, and Carson noted that more vehicles were sold this year than last. “Seems the economy is beginning to improve in Charlotte,” he said.
