A 1950 Pontiac Chieftain Silver Streak convertible owned by guitarist Keith Richards and used by The Rolling Stones is headlining Bonhams Sale of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia.
Richards owned the car while he and the rest of The Rolling Stones were based on the Cote d’Azur of France in 1971 to record the acclaimed “Exile on Main Street” album, according to a Bonhams news release.
The car, which features in photographs of the band at the time, has attracted a pre-sale estimate of £18,000 to £22,000 (approximately $28,500 to $31,730).
The sale will be held April 30, 2012, at the RAF Museum in Hendon, London. An online auction catalog is not yet available.
When The Rolling Stones arrived on the Cote d’Azur in 1971, the band was joined by a steady stream of visitors, from William Burroughs to Gram Parsons, at Villa Nellcote, the mansion that had first gained notoriety as a Nazi headquarters during the French occupation.
Other automobiles highlighted in Bonhams’ sale include a 3-liter Bentley Speed Model estimated to bring £150,000 – 180,000 ($238,000 to $285,500); a left-hand drive 1958 Austin Healey 100/6 (estimate £28,000/$44,420 to £32,000/$50,760); and a 1957 Lancia B20 Aurelia (estimate £25,000/$29,660 to £30,000/$47,595).
